99 dollar music videos

What is it?
99dollarmusicvideo.com Is a you tube channel which has various types of music videos which have all been created with a minimum payment of 99 dollars. It it to show people that it is possible to create a music video on such a low budget. The videos include essentials such as fast cuts and effects which would be expected in a normal music video that costs thousands. Yet as it is a budgeted version, the quality wouldn't be as good as a professional music video as the facilities would be limited and the quality wouldn't be as good either.

What is their ethos?
What they intend to do, is to make people feel as if anything is possible. People would like to get into the music industry but to do so you have to get yourself noticed and this is certainly on way of doing it. By having your own music video would get noticed to an audience because it is creativity made within your own home yet it is pleasing to watch. As it would catch viewers it would then get you noticed as people would then have recommendations on it. By doing this, it gives people the chance to get noticed and have their very own music video to how they want it all for a low cost.

What labels and genres appear on the channel?
The main genres that appear on the channel is rock and indie. this is because they aren't as common and therefore have a harder chance to get into the higher business of the music industry. The genres are also quick to work with as the video doesn't have to have a relation to the words because that's what they are commonly known to do.

How does it encourage audience participation?
This encourages the audience's participation as it lets them know that it is possible to do their very own music video on a low budget. If they are interested, they can make it happen. It is an experience to get them into the feeling of it all without having the expenses to worry about and then can call it their own so they have complete control over it all.

Is it possible to make professional 99 dollar video?
It is not possible to make a professional $99 music video as the effects, cuts, quality etc. all have to be to the best. All the equipment would be high end and it would most probably cost double if not more than $99 just to use it. There are also computerized equipment to edit the video which would also cost a lot of money. Then there are extras, location and costume to add on top of that. All of these feautures are considered in a professional music video to make it high quality to the viewer to give the artist a good image. For the $99 you are very limited which bakes it look amateur.

Goodwins ideas about Music Videos

Andrew Goodwin spent years analyzing music videos and the music industry. He then put together a set of key features which applies to all music videos. Although not all features would appear in each video, at least one would fit in its purpose. These key features were then illustrated in his book 'Dancing in the Distraction Factory' in 1992.

Illustration is the simplest concept to base a music video around as it is just a visual mage that matches up with the lyrics being said. A good example is Owl City-Fireflies because at 00:29 as the word 'Fireflies appears on a toy gadget it is exactly when he sings the word. This then occurs again at 00:55 when he says 'Slowly'. Also at 1:19 as he says 'Fox Trot', he is pushing a button which is labelled for trop.

amplifying is when the video doesn't match the tone of the lyrics. For example, in 'Adele's-Someone like you', she seems to be emotional throughout the whole video but the song itself is about her getting over it and moving on. At 01:09 she says 'For me, it isn't over' which is a positive thing to be saying but she looks depressed which indicates no relation. This occurs a few times throughout the whole video.

Iconography is an action that is repeated throughout a music video and over many more of the artists video. This is like a trade mark to make something resemble them so they would always be remembered. Amy Winehouse's hair is a good example as it is her hairstyle in the majority of her music videos and it is still remembered now after her death. In 'Tears dry on their own' the first time you see her signified hair is at 00:09. This hairstyle is kept throughout the whole video and throughout many of her others.

Close-ups are a common feature in music videos to promote the sales for the single. It is to show the artist commonly throughout the video but is mostly used on female artists to show them as a sexual object to the audience other than a genuine artist. It is clear in 'Britney Spears'- Prerogative' as at 00:06 there is a close up of her straight away and then again at 00:10 of her lips which symbolises a sexual context. It then shows her at 00:38 as she is on a car bonnet in the water.

Voyeurism is to have a sexual appeal to the artist. This is commonly for women to gain a large male audience. 'What's my name' by Rihanna, in the supermarket at 00:16 is a back shot of her which is showing her as a sexual object as you cant see her face. Again at 00:44 is a close up to her thigh/ bum area which is a sexual appeal to the audience to get an attraction mainly from males.

Music Video Techniques

Large number of cuts in a music video is how many cuts there are from scene to scene throughout the whole music video. It adds effects to the music video and can also show you what type of music video it is. By having a lot of cuts can mean that it is modern and has a more positive vibe. Where as if there aren't as many, it could be an earlier video with a slower pace to it. Keri Hillson ft Nelly-Lose control is a really good example as there are many cuts throughout the whole music video. The cuts are in time with the beat which makes it more effective and it also makes it look visually pleasing to the viewer. It shows that the artist has a very energetic vibe to her and it all works along with the genre of the song itself. On the other hand, Rick Astley-Never gonna give you up, does have cuts throughout the music video just  not as much as 'Keri's' and not as much fitted to the beat. This is because this music video isn't as recent so the equipment used was very limited and down graded compared to todays. As it seemed like a very simple music video, it doesn't appeal to many viewers and it doesn't really fit this purpose of cuts because of the amount and timing by it all.

Special effect are effects that change up the video either slightly or completely. They are little things to add a better visual intake to the viewers. It ranges from having graphics to changing the whole thing which can mistake it as a green screen shot. Effects Make the music video look different and unique by adding a specific style to it so you can get an image on the artist themselves. Will.I.Am-Feelin' myself is used up of special effects throughout the whole music video. It adds emphasis to some parts such as the car and also adds visuals to the way you see each artist e.g. instead of having the artist stand then singly, there is an effect which follows them through almost like a rollercoaster effect. Each effect make the video unique and stand out which means that it hass been successful and by standing out, it has got the attention of many viewers. Kylie Minogue - The Loco-motion is an older video so the effects are kept to the minimum. As it is an old video, the facilities wouldn't have been like they are today so it would have been harder to create effects. As it was harder to create the effects, they don't look as good as 'Will.I.Am's' video. Effects back then would have been a major thing so it would have been pleasing to the audience then but not now as we know there are many other videos with effects much better.

Cutting to the beat is when each cut to a different scene is timed in with the beat of the song. This makes the video flow as one whether it is a slow or fast song. It adds effect by not only showing a video to be behind the song but showing a different way to interact with it. The majority of cuts are usually fast because modern songs now how a faster tempo to it. Knife Party-Centipede is a very fast beat song which means that each cut would be done on many of the high beat drops. This is done throughout the majority of the music video although there are some parts where the scene it still through the beats. Each beat change goes to a different scene that is relevant and because it is a fast transaction, it adds a better effect to it as a whole. Madonna-Ray of light doesn't have as many cuts to it and the majority of them are off beat. This makes the video slack in this area of techniques. It doesn't have a good image to the audience if they were to specifically look for these things. Although there aren't many cuts to the beat, it would have made a bigger difference to it if there were on time at least. This song didn't really meet the technique as it was slacking in more than one area to fit its purpose and to the audience it wouldn't of made such as a good impression.

Varied camera language is to do with different angles etc. you have with the camera. It adds extra visual effects to the music video to make it more interesting to the video as a whole. The more weird that the angles are positioned, the better it will look. It is to get the viewers attention instead of looking like an ordinary music video. Bastille-Pompeii uses a wide variety of camera angles in different shots from high to low and from still to moving. In all of these shots, there is also actions throughout it that catch the audiences eye as they are different from a normal music video. It is a sort of story to it. By having a story to it, the angle and movement by the camera will relate to it as from the movement of the artist. Because he is running throughout the music video, the camera language is creative by following the style. Justin Bieber-Beauty And A Beat doesn't have much camera language at all. The video itself is very unique but the language is all the same. The angle only changes by the way he holds the camera. Other than that, there isn't much more language throughout the video other than the under water scene. This slyly appeals to the audience only in the way by it is a different style of music video and it doesn't stand out in terms of the technique it is used in.

Green screen is an addition to a music video to make it look better or to make someone seem as if they fit in to where they want to be. It just changes the locations by the background which is a green screen in which you can edit whatever you want onto it over the computer whether it is an image or a moving video. Katy Perry-California Gurls is a most recent video which means that the accessibility to better facilities were available. Her video includes props which are on set but the overall background has been done by green screen. This video catches the audiences attention because it is not a usual green screen type video that would often be used. Although it does include props, it does fit the technique as the green screen done is very accurate. On the other hand, Michael Jackson-Don't Stop was one of the first famous green screen videos. He brought out this video with various different backgrounds from still to moving images all of which didn't make sense at all. As it was one of the first main green screen videos, the graphics wasn't at its best bet it made a great opening for the new discovery of what green screening can be used for. Artists then used this technique throughout many videos. It appeals to the audience in a way that it is different but it doesn't match the song therefore it has to relevance to it.

Lip-synching is having a pre recorded song and then fit it in with a music video over the top of it. The artist, or person taking part in it, would have to mime the lyrics and make it as clear to fit in with the song as possible or actually sing the song but have the sound edited over with the pre recorded song. This makes it sound better as there would be auto tune on to pre recorded song. Gotye-Somebody That I Used To Know is a good example of lip-synching as every word and tone of it fits the expression and movement of his mouth. It seems to be that he actually sang the song and had it edited over because by the expression on his face, you can see the amount of effort he is putting in to it. To the audience it doesn't look as if he is lip-synching and he is just singing it normally which shows that it succeeded in this technique. Miley Cyrus-Party In The USA isn't much of a good example. This is because when she says the words it does not fit the tone of the song itself. Also the way she says it, look as if she has put too much effort in to in in which when you actually speak, does not really look like that. To the audience only at some parts it is visible, but not at other parts. This means that it is not completely fulfilling this technique because it is able to be seen that it is not perfect.

Styles and Conventions of Music Videos

Genre Video
There are many types of genres in the music industry all ranging from rock to country. Everyone has their own taste in music therefore there has to be all these different types so that it would fit the purpose towards each individual. Each artist has their own specific genre as well in which they try to keep to at all times but sometimes mixes it up over their career. I am using "Disclosure-White Noise" as my example because it is a genre of music that i am very familiar with. They have a house/electronic genre to all their music. The beats are very 'live' which makes it have a sudden urge to get people into it. House music is a recent popular genre as it is modern and takes the interest of many young people which seem to lead the rest or the population. At the beginning of this video, for the first 15 seconds the beat is exactly the same. Then at 00:16 the beat changes to a more uplifted vibe in which different tones are being introduced which builds an introduction for the song. Then at 00:32 there is lyrical speech being introduced which adds emphasis to the song as it doesn't intend to be just beats throughout the whole thing. If no lyrics were in this song then it wouldn't be very popular. As it is a house genre, the voice has been edited to sound almost electrical to fit in with the genre as well as the beat. At 01:04 the beat changes to a more suttle style which is a build up for the drop in which the beat will be at its strongest point. As this genre is a common style now, making more songs like this would be ideal as it would appeal to the majority of people. The audience would interact more as they are familiar with the style which would be chosen so they would know how to react to it. This would be a good genre to take into consideration as it would highly appeal to a lot of people.

Genre Subverting Video
A genre subverting video is where the music video itself doesn't match the genre of song. It is when there are some irrelevant aspects that have no connection between each other what so ever. The artist may stick to a specific genre throughout their career but then change up their music videos to fit in with what it relevant and interesting to recent viewers. "Taylor Swift" is a highly known artist to do this. She is mainly a country singer as it is in her background but the music videos she now produces are on a different scale to her genre. "22" is a recent song of hers in which you can strongly hear the country genre of it but the video isn't directly aimed to it. Her performance throughout the video keeps to the same line as being modern and to not interact with the country vibe in which her song actually portrays. Throughout the whole video, all of the clothes that each person are wearing are completely modern and what aver person would commonly wear. You can see that this is different to a country scenario as if the video was to follow the song, the clothes would be more country like having a cow boy hat or boots etc. At 01:12 the scenery is at a beach in which a country song would often be done at a deserted area or in a local country side. As it is at a beach, this shows that it is trying to be more modern and interact with other known music videos to fit it. Then at 02:23 they look like they are getting ready to go out to a party. This is different to the genre as the style that they dress themselves up as is the complete opposite to what a country music video would have. To the audience, this is showing that she is still interacting with her song ways by keeping to the country genre but it is also showing that she is keeping up with modern videos so she changes the visual side to her career. To consider this into a music video would be quite good as it mixes things up a little in which many people dont do and it will make you stand out as an individual.

Performance
A performance video is where the artist would be performing in front a an audience. This would then be pre recorded and submerged into the music video as a whole. It isn't just the artist performing to an audience but the artist could be performing as he were to be performing to an audience by doing it straight to the camera. This gives it that performing effect and has a form of interaction between audience and artist. "Red Hot Chili Peppers-The Adventures of Raindance Maggie" is a complete performance video. It takes place in a local residential area on top of a building in front of a live audience. All footage that is in this music video was recorded through their performance. Their performance is very enthusiastic from start to finish. This is what makes it a good example of a performing video. As their performance doesn't decrease, neither would the attention of their audience. Right from the beginning of the music video there is the birds eye view of them doing the intro counts to the start of the song then at 00:04 as the beat drops into the song, there is a cut to the front of them in which you can see then beginning their song. Through this stage, there are also 'Graphics' which tell you their location and the date of when they performed this song. at 00:10 there is a visual of the lead singer doing some 'dance' movement to the microphone to show that the song is about to start. By showing this, makes it clear that is is a performance video as he will be doing it to get the attention of all the viewers that are present. Then at 00:25 there is imagery from the audience. This is to show the reactions of the audience to give a more realistic vibe in the music video. All three of these time examples occur very quickly right at the start of the video yet only the first and second carry on throughout. Performance videos are a good way to interact with the audience. It gets them involved and shows reactions which would be a good thing to use as it will be more relatable.

Narrative
A narrative music video is a music video in which a story is being told throughout the whole thing. It has a simple yet understanding effect in which the audience can get the understatement of what is going along in the video. The song is usually interwoven with the story as the tempo and genre of the song would reflect on how the story line would turn out. "Ed Sheeran-Lego House" is a good example of a narrative music video as it is a story of an obsessed fan trying to follow the life of the artist. As the video progresses the story line does too. It starts of with a casual approach but then the meaning of the story is gradually shown throughout the performance. At 00:17 is when you first realize that 'Ed' isn't going to be the main actor in the video. Usually the main actor is shown first thing so that you know who the story is about in which this video is doing. Throughout the video 'Rupert Grint' is lip-synching with the original song. This is reflecting what is said as it is coming from a different person so the song originally isn't about 'Ed' but someone else. Then at 02:25 'Rupert' enters the stage impersonating 'Ed'. As it is an impersonation, you can get a rough image of what the whole song is about. This adds character to his video as it is something different in which not many artists have done. Normally the artist is interacted with the whole music video but at 03:30 is the only time you see 'Ed' appear in the video for the first time and only for a few seconds. Narrative music videos are usually very popular towards its audience as they can often relate to the story which is being told for example a breakup or a death of a family member. This would be a good style to go for as relating to an audience is a smart and realistic way to show views of something that people aren't always ready to admit to.

Pastiche
A Pastiche music video is a music video that relates to a movie. It may only have some components that have trace from it or the whole music video could be a complete reenactment of the movie just with a lyrical song over the top of it. Although it may just be the artist acting as a character from a movie, it could also be scenes from a movie embedded into the music video. "Iggy Azalea-Fancy" is near enough a complete remake of the film 'Clueless'. Every aspect is a certain match up to the movie just with a few adjustments to make it more modern and fit Iggy's appearance. At 00:05 it starts off straight away with her picking out her outfit for the day. This is also a part of the film with occurs right at the beginning of the film. The outfit that she chooses is also the exact same outfit in clueless just adjusted to the way she wanted it. Then at 00:40 it goes to 'Charlie xcx' feature. This is when they are all sat around a table eating lunch together. Again, this is an exact re enactment of what occurs in the film just with a modern look to it yet keeping the same kind of styled clothing. At 01:11 there is another re enactment scene of when she is in the car with her two friends. This also occurs in the original film/ Throughout the music video, every little detail is to fit the same story lie of the movie. This is just to show the audience an original movie can be made into a modern style to fit a song. It would be a good style to look into as it would ne easy to do and it would be reasonably popular as it would get people to know the theme of it.
Interpretive
Interpretive music videos have imagery of what has been said. This is a way of showing the viewer what is happening instead of them just hearing it. It makes relevance to the song as it links up the imagery in a way which it will be trying to portray as either just a song or to the artist them self. "Katy Perry-Firework" is a highly meaningful song that is relatable to many people. It is about being yourself and not worrying about anything else and also to stand up for what you believe in. Throughout the music video, although there is mainly one interpretive moment that shows up through out the whole thing, there are a couple of other moments which are there yet it is hard to notice unless you actually look at the video in depth. At 00:20 as she says 'drifting through the wind' you can see that there is wind because of her dress. It blows to one side to show that there is wind which will make relevance to the song. Then at 01:05 when she says 'come and show them what you're worth' the boy is getting ready to stand up for to his dad. This is a strong point that start of the video as it is the first thing that you see that will make you relate to the video. Then at 03:16 there are fireworks shooting across the sky as she said 'as they shoot across they sky'. These were possibly the most unlikely parts that wouldn't be as noticeable as an interpretive moment in the video. Yet the most common one is whenever she says 'Firework' there is a high chance that you would see some sort of fireworks in the video. This type of music video is good as it can show a relation between the viewer and what is actually being said/done. It would be a good one to take in to consideration as it would get more peoples attention by the relativeness.

Impressionist
Impressionist music videos are videos that match the beat and tempo of a song. If it was a slow song then the acting or imagery in the music video would be slow, gentle and will flow as a whole. If it is a fast beat song then the imagery in it would be completely different as there would be a lot of movement and meaningful feelings to it which would be easily spotted through the video. "Daft Punk-Around the World" keeps to this throughout the whole video. It is a very upbeat song so the movements reflect that very clearly. There is not one point in the video which comes away from it which is really good as some can slack off towards the end. All the moves are repetitive which makes it easier but there are different groups doing different things. At 00:26 there are a group of girls that look like they are in swim wear. As they go up the stairs, they do it in time with the beat to make it look as if the rhythm is planned from their movement. Then at 00:57 when the speech comes in there are astronauts starting to move. They have a different rhythm to the others as they are going in time with the lyrics and not the beat. These two different groups of people are used effectively through out the music video. All of the other dancers are like the girls but have there own set routine yet it is still to the beat and not the lyrics. As they are done together, you can see the different atmosphere between them which is connected to the song so you can see in in the song as well as the dancers. This is a good style as it makes sense to have a video match the beat and lyrics instead of going way off track and have say a slow song but with rock dancers in it.

Abstract
An abstract video is a video in which doesn't make much sense at all. The song could have relative actions to it by the lyrics but the video would have a complete different path. It is mostly a video to show an artistic view of something other than sticking to the same old have relations to the song theme as the majority of other music videos do. "Breach-Jack" has to most definitely be one of the most odd videos I have ever seen. It has no relevance to the lyrics of the song at all. The genre is a house type song so the actions match it but the visual look to is does not. At 00:21 there is a man combing hair on a speaker for no apparent reason. This is just to make it look weird and have an effect that will make you want to watch the rest of the music video to see whether the rest of the video is weird. Then at 00:30 there is a women singing over the lyrics of the song then it changes to her with hair covering her face. The hair is an opposite to the original self by covering the features with no hair with it and having bald spots where there should be hair. Once again this has no relativeness to the lyrics what so ever. At 01:29 there is a male and female having a sort of dance off between each other but they keep changing by the different amounts of hair they have on their body. This video makes no sense at all and has no relativeness to the song what so ever. Although it doesn't relate, the video is amusing so it will want the audience want to watch it as it is a video that isn't often done. his would be a good style to use as it will definitely catch the viewers attention.

Parody
A parody music video is a remake of an original song from a known artist. It is when an amateur will take the song into their own perspective and make it their own. They will either do a remake of the video and keep the lyrics but just change the style how the perform or they will change the lyrics completely but keep the same beat. "Kesha-Die Young Parody(The Midnight Beast)" is just one of their many parody music videos. Right from the beginning you can see clearly that it is a parody as he starts to play the guitar and then stops as he plays a not wrong. then at 00:04 there is a quotation about 'Dying young'. Straight away you can see that it will be a parody because the quotation goes directly against 'Kesha's' original lyric about dying young. Then at 00:12 as he starts to sing the song, they are complete different lyrics to her original song. This is to make an original amateur version of the song to make it more relatable or appealing to the audience. Then as 00:51 is the introduction to one of them dressing up as 'Kesha'. This is a common thing in most parody music videos as it add extra humour to the video. Sometimes they do it to make fun of their look so they make them look worse than they originally are or they do it to add an extra part to the video. Parody music videos are all very much similar to one another. People usually watch them to see a downgrade version of what people actually think about the music. This is a good way to relate to the audience as it can be something that the audience think of it but just wont personally say or do something about it themselves.

Referencing

Referencing music videos are when an artist will include some footage from a movie into their music video. The song being sang is originally from the movie but then will be turned into a soundtrack so it will be heard and seen all over individually rather than just hearing and seeing it in the film. "Demi Lovato-Let It Go" is her own version of the song originally done by 'Indina Menzel'. Her video is a mixture of her and takes from the movie. The takes from the movie are the exact parts as it would completely be in time with the music video as a whole. The first part you see a take from the movie is at 00:14. This has a visual scene to the lyrics as what is said is seen and then it has a lead up to the mountains but then it goes back to 'Demi' herself. At 00:51 there is another take from the movie but the lyrics don't match to the scene of the movie. It is all about relation to different parts throughout the film. Throughout the whole music video, the takes go backwards and forwards from 'Demi' and the movie. This is because the song she has chosen is the most popular and meaningful song of the whole movie. As the song progresses, so does each scene from the movie. It catches the audiences attention as it is a relation to a movie and the scenes in the music video come directly from the movie other than having a re enactment of them. This would be a good style to have as it is quite simple yet effective to getting the audience to want to watch it which would make it a popular video.

Animation
An animated video consists of having animations either at some point of the video or throughout the whole thing. It is either lots of images taken and then submerged together and sped up to fit the song or it is computer edited and then added to pre recorded footage to make it look as if say the artist is interacting with the animations. "Gorillaz-Feel Good Inc" is a good example of this as the whole video is mainly animation although there is a part where there is an animation with the band shown in it. The whole music video is just an animation of them singing the song instead of doing it themselves to make it look more different to the viewers. Straight from the beginning you can tell that it is going to be an animation video from the bridge which then follows through to a building high up in the skyline. Then at 00:16 you are able to see that the characters in the music are all animated from the room full of them and then it goes to the main character which will be performing throughout the music video. At 00:23 it even shows that the musical instruments are being animated into the synchronisation of the song to add more effect to it. Then at 01:45 is when you see then band interact into the music video themselves. Even though they suddenly come into the video, they have kept it as an animation by adding effect to the way they are being seen to the audience. This style of music video is very different to any other style as it is a completely animated video with only a short time of the actual artists being involved. Even when they are being involved, it is still sticking to animation where as another artist would like to keep it more simple and modern by having them or actors in their videos to make them more relatable. It would be a good idea as it is a unique way to show what type of artist you are and be able to connect with the audience in a different way.

Purpose of a music video

A release of a new music video is to show awareness to the audience. Even though they may have heard the song already, the video would make them become more into the song as the video makes the song more amusing. Ed Sheeran is already a highly known artist and has a constant release of songs that people are deeply in to. One of his recent songs “Thinking out loud” has a new music video that has been currently released. It is shown everywhere and constantly so people would become more aware and be able to show that they are interested in the video as well as the song.

The music video promotes the record label as well as the artist. This means that the record label would be getting advertisement so that other artists would be interested in using that company. The artist would also be promoted and get known by being viewed by numerous amounts of people. For every time the music video is played, there is advertisement towards it so they would be getting money from it. This is showed by adverts, YouTube videos and many more. VEVO is a highly known label which is promoted throughout YouTube and is shown on pretty much every music video know. The name of the company is shown throughout the video on the top right corner.

Art is a way to make the video and artist look good. It is a way of showing the audience what the song is about and what the artist wants to portray themselves as. Some videos are very artistic and contain more graphic than reality footage. “It Girl” by Pharrell Williams is on a game based video but there are edits of him coming in. These edits make him look as if he is part of the ‘game look video’ or even some sort of glitch. He first appears in the video at 0:29 in a retro glitch sort of way. He then appears again at 1:35 as an image of a character that you would commonly see in most games.

An image is to be built upon the artist to how they would like the world to see them. By doing various things would change their image completely. They may go from genuine acts which everyone will like to doing something really out there such as down dressing. Miley Cyrus is a good example for this. In her acting days she done closed music videos that didn’t really portray her real image, it was the image that everyone else wanted to see. Now her acting career for Disney is over, she has opened to the true self which she now wants people to see her as.
Synergy is a song that has been composed from a film. It pre plays in the film then later releases as a single. The video if usually a scene from the movie or has clips from it. “Men in Black” By Will Smith is one of the most common examples for synergy. The complete song has all clips from the movie. “Let it go” from Frozen is a more recent example. The whole music video is also from the movie so it is therefore completely synergy. This will make the song a permanent symbol of relevance to the movie which it is played in.

music video outlets

Social Media are online sites such as Facebook and Twitter where people go to show what they are doing and express how they feel. Artists will use these social networking sites to advertise their music. By using these types of sites, would be an easier and quicker way to get it noticed. The artists fans would be able to view the music within minutes and share it within seconds. Being able to re post and share to friends in matters of seconds means that it would go viral within a few weeks or even days. This will then get the music video noticed worldwide. The positive impact on the artist is that their music would go worldwide within days and they would become a sudden interest to the audience. This is also a way of free advertisement. The bad thing is that the audience may not like the music or they wont re post so they wont get noticed. The record label will also have free advertisement. If the artist tells a song from the company, they will get a profit out of the income. The bad thing is that there may not be as many sales as predicted so they may lose money instead of gaining. Social media would be able to take into consideration the artists music video. It will then be able to use the video of their own advertisement or promote the video for a fee. The only thing is, the video may not be as good as suspected so it will just be a regular comment on the site. The audience would be able to watch the video as much as they want for free. Not everyone would be able to have access to social media so therefore they wont be able to see the video.

Mainstream TV are programs that show pre recorded footage on the BBC, ITV, SKY1 and many more. They all promote the music video through the footage over time. Although they promote the footage, it may be delayed a while before they actually promote it. This is because they will have to find out about it which would take a while as it has to get through social media first. This would be good for the artist as they are being promoted in a bigger way other than social media. It will be shown constantly on repeats etc. and also be linked to know websites. It may be negative as it might be promoted in a negative way with negative feedback in which the artist wont have any good outcome from it all. The record label would gain good outcome from this as it will be promoting their business but if the artist has been exploited in a negative way, this will also reflect on the record label. If the audience see it through mainstream, this is a way to get them to watch it and then go and talk or share it to others. The only bad side about it is that they may not have access to mainstream tv and therefore wont be able to see it being advertised.

Music Channels such as MTV and Urban show music videos of specific genre. Some music channels only do one specific genre whereas others do a wider variety. There are videos constantly played throughout the day in which many people would view or if not even listen to. This will be good for the artist as their video would be played over and over again on many channels. The only down side about it, is that it may not reach the specific taste of some channels and therefore wont fit in and get low rating. The record label would be getting good feedback as they would be showing what they are enabled to be producing and then get a higher rate for other artists. The audience would be able to view the video over and over again which is good and show others but it might not be up to their satisfaction and might change the channel. They may also not have accessibility to view these programs to view the video.

Direct CD Releases such as the Michael Jackson CD are all pre recorded. These are sold out to people who have the interest in the artist. It includes the song and sometimes the music video. This is a popular way to sell out the artists music but not many people buy CD's anymore. The CD's provide a profit for the artist and the record label but it is now easier, quicker and sometimes cheaper to download the music video or just view it over the internet. This means that the CD ratings may not be as high as suspected. The audience would either buy the CD to listen at home on a surround system or to listen in a car but other than that they would have it downloaded as it is more up to date with todays technology. The audience also may not be able to buy the CD through cost reasons. Due to this they wouldn't buy it so the selling rate would be even lower.

Streaming Websites like Youtube and ITunes have constant access to the music videos. This enables anyone to view the music video at their own choice. Youtube and ITunes are different as Youtube have free access and ITunes you have to pay. This payment goes to the artist as well as the record label. These are good ways to view the video as the more views and purchases that are received, the recommendations for it rise. This will show the audience that it may be a popular video. If it is to be popular, it means that it is good. You are also able to comment and rate it so it will get better reviews. Although you can do this, sometimes there will be bad comments and ratings so it would be able to be recommended to others. This will just give it a lower viewing list on the websites. The record label would get advertisement and tell the viewers about the company which will bring them into good concepts when it comes to promoting another artist. They will also get a profit from any sales they make. The audience are able to judge the music video to how they want it to look like.

Artist's Websites such as Myspace is where the artist will be able to post their music videos. This is an easier way to self promote themselves without having to go into depth with social or direct etc. People are able to access these websites through the internet which means you can only do it if you have the access needed. The artist will have a cheap way to show themselves off to the audience but not many people would know about their website unless it was shown somewhere for people to find out about it. The record label would have a low stage of promotion as the amount of people viewing the website may be kept to a minimum.

Downloads from sites such as youtube converter already have the video set. All that is needed to be done is to download it onto your device in which you want it. These can sometimes be legal of illegal. This can be a good thing for the artist as people are able to download their music for free meaning they will get noticed but the majority of the time it is being done illegaly which means they wont get any benefit apart from being noticed. The record label have the same benefits and negative impacts as the artist. The audience however, are able to download the music for free but there might not be access for them to be able to download it.
