Large number of cuts in a music video is how many cuts there are from scene to scene throughout the whole music video. It adds effects to the music video and can also show you what type of music video it is. By having a lot of cuts can mean that it is modern and has a more positive vibe. Where as if there aren't as many, it could be an earlier video with a slower pace to it. Keri Hillson ft Nelly-Lose control is a really good example as there are many cuts throughout the whole music video. The cuts are in time with the beat which makes it more effective and it also makes it look visually pleasing to the viewer. It shows that the artist has a very energetic vibe to her and it all works along with the genre of the song itself. On the other hand, Rick Astley-Never gonna give you up, does have cuts throughout the music video just not as much as 'Keri's' and not as much fitted to the beat. This is because this music video isn't as recent so the equipment used was very limited and down graded compared to todays. As it seemed like a very simple music video, it doesn't appeal to many viewers and it doesn't really fit this purpose of cuts because of the amount and timing by it all.
Special effect are effects that change up the video either slightly or completely. They are little things to add a better visual intake to the viewers. It ranges from having graphics to changing the whole thing which can mistake it as a green screen shot. Effects Make the music video look different and unique by adding a specific style to it so you can get an image on the artist themselves. Will.I.Am-Feelin' myself is used up of special effects throughout the whole music video. It adds emphasis to some parts such as the car and also adds visuals to the way you see each artist e.g. instead of having the artist stand then singly, there is an effect which follows them through almost like a rollercoaster effect. Each effect make the video unique and stand out which means that it hass been successful and by standing out, it has got the attention of many viewers. Kylie Minogue - The Loco-motion is an older video so the effects are kept to the minimum. As it is an old video, the facilities wouldn't have been like they are today so it would have been harder to create effects. As it was harder to create the effects, they don't look as good as 'Will.I.Am's' video. Effects back then would have been a major thing so it would have been pleasing to the audience then but not now as we know there are many other videos with effects much better.
Cutting to the beat is when each cut to a different scene is timed in with the beat of the song. This makes the video flow as one whether it is a slow or fast song. It adds effect by not only showing a video to be behind the song but showing a different way to interact with it. The majority of cuts are usually fast because modern songs now how a faster tempo to it. Knife Party-Centipede is a very fast beat song which means that each cut would be done on many of the high beat drops. This is done throughout the majority of the music video although there are some parts where the scene it still through the beats. Each beat change goes to a different scene that is relevant and because it is a fast transaction, it adds a better effect to it as a whole. Madonna-Ray of light doesn't have as many cuts to it and the majority of them are off beat. This makes the video slack in this area of techniques. It doesn't have a good image to the audience if they were to specifically look for these things. Although there aren't many cuts to the beat, it would have made a bigger difference to it if there were on time at least. This song didn't really meet the technique as it was slacking in more than one area to fit its purpose and to the audience it wouldn't of made such as a good impression.
Varied camera language is to do with different angles etc. you have with the camera. It adds extra visual effects to the music video to make it more interesting to the video as a whole. The more weird that the angles are positioned, the better it will look. It is to get the viewers attention instead of looking like an ordinary music video. Bastille-Pompeii uses a wide variety of camera angles in different shots from high to low and from still to moving. In all of these shots, there is also actions throughout it that catch the audiences eye as they are different from a normal music video. It is a sort of story to it. By having a story to it, the angle and movement by the camera will relate to it as from the movement of the artist. Because he is running throughout the music video, the camera language is creative by following the style. Justin Bieber-Beauty And A Beat doesn't have much camera language at all. The video itself is very unique but the language is all the same. The angle only changes by the way he holds the camera. Other than that, there isn't much more language throughout the video other than the under water scene. This slyly appeals to the audience only in the way by it is a different style of music video and it doesn't stand out in terms of the technique it is used in.
Green screen is an addition to a music video to make it look better or to make someone seem as if they fit in to where they want to be. It just changes the locations by the background which is a green screen in which you can edit whatever you want onto it over the computer whether it is an image or a moving video. Katy Perry-California Gurls is a most recent video which means that the accessibility to better facilities were available. Her video includes props which are on set but the overall background has been done by green screen. This video catches the audiences attention because it is not a usual green screen type video that would often be used. Although it does include props, it does fit the technique as the green screen done is very accurate. On the other hand, Michael Jackson-Don't Stop was one of the first famous green screen videos. He brought out this video with various different backgrounds from still to moving images all of which didn't make sense at all. As it was one of the first main green screen videos, the graphics wasn't at its best bet it made a great opening for the new discovery of what green screening can be used for. Artists then used this technique throughout many videos. It appeals to the audience in a way that it is different but it doesn't match the song therefore it has to relevance to it.
Lip-synching is having a pre recorded song and then fit it in with a music video over the top of it. The artist, or person taking part in it, would have to mime the lyrics and make it as clear to fit in with the song as possible or actually sing the song but have the sound edited over with the pre recorded song. This makes it sound better as there would be auto tune on to pre recorded song. Gotye-Somebody That I Used To Know is a good example of lip-synching as every word and tone of it fits the expression and movement of his mouth. It seems to be that he actually sang the song and had it edited over because by the expression on his face, you can see the amount of effort he is putting in to it. To the audience it doesn't look as if he is lip-synching and he is just singing it normally which shows that it succeeded in this technique. Miley Cyrus-Party In The USA isn't much of a good example. This is because when she says the words it does not fit the tone of the song itself. Also the way she says it, look as if she has put too much effort in to in in which when you actually speak, does not really look like that. To the audience only at some parts it is visible, but not at other parts. This means that it is not completely fulfilling this technique because it is able to be seen that it is not perfect.
